This is to have succeeded-

To win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children; To earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends; To appreciate beauty, To find the best in others, To leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, A garden patch or a redeemed social condition; To know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded. By: Ralph Waldo Emerson

“Approach could be numerous, but what really Counts is output"

A Priest dies & is waiting in line at heavens gate. Ahead of him is a guy, fashionably dressed, in dark sun glasses, a loud shirt, leather jacket & jeans. God to the guy : Who r u ? Guy : I am Delhi - Agra Express Bus driver. God : Take this gold robe & enter kingdom of heaven. God to the Priest : Who r u ? Priest : I am a priest & spent 40yrs preaching good to people. God : Take this cotton robe and enter heaven. Priest : God, how come that foul mouthed, rash driver gets a gold & I spent all my life preaching good get cotton. God : Results, my son, results. Too much motivation bites the guest:

Once in a beautiful town there was a wonderful bungalow located in the heart of the town. In that bungalow there lived a couple. There were also two dogs in the bungalow who were loved very much by their owners, and the dogs were honest as well in guarding the yard of bungalow. Every day each dog used to get 1 kilogram of meat during the lunch. The boss was happy with his dogs and the dogs were happy with their owner. On a dark night the thieves entered the bungalow. The dogs were very active and they chased the thieves out. The owner heard the dogs bark, and saw the incidence and was very happy with his dogs. The owner rewarded the dogs for their deed. The owner planned to keep the dogs alert and motivate them further. He decided to increase the food provision of the dogs, thus he increased the meat intake of dogs from 1 kilogram per day to 1.5 kilograms per day. The dogs were happy; owner too was happy. First of all the 1 kilogram of fresh meat itself was a good fo

Why teaching mindfulness benefits students learning?

The following is an excerpt from: Learning to BREATHE: A Mindfulness Curriculum for Adolescents to Cultivate Emotion Regulation, Attention, and Performance. By Patricia C. Broderick, PhD What do children and adolescents need to be successful in life? When this question arises, a common answer is “a good education.”  Academic success is the goal that is emphasized in standards-based movements about education reform, and it is currently in the forefront of public consciousness. The most typical benchmarks of academic success include outcomes such as test performance, progress through the educational system, and mastery of content knowledge. However, teachers and therapists who work with youth on a day-to- day basis, and who witness their progress and their struggles, know that there is more to this story. Approaches for Teaching Moral;

We as humans always try to differentiate between right and wrong. And also we make it a point to teach and transfer the same knowledge to our children. Many schools too make it a point to take it as a extra curricular subject by calling it as 'Moral science'. Let us understand what is moral. Moral relates to principles of right and wrong in behaviour, especially for teaching right behaviour (Wiktionary). Children spend major part of their day in school environment. And in school, children spend more time in the company of teachers. Teachers often model values unconsciously. They show who and what they think highly of or, conversely, do not think highly of by their emotional reactions. They share personal heroes, preferences among activities, approval and disapproval of the actions of people and other qualities with emotional signals that communicate in infectious ways to children. We also should not ignore the fact that the teachers themselves become models (http://www.educati

Do cows know about their friends? (Education and socialization):

By: Maaz Mohammed A.Q Ccels Learning Associates Bengaluru            O ne evening I was passing through the road, I saw six cows sitting together on a bridge. The cows were sitting so close to each other in a group as if some close friends are sitting together. It was a very great sight to look at and admire. My question is, do the cows know that they are sitting in a group of their own species. Do the cows know that they have learnt to live in a community, as we can see them in current position of sitting together? Do cows understand the implications of socialization? Did the cows acquire the social skills by observing their other counterparts or it is genetically acquired? Let us discuss the socialization of human beings. Currently in modern education curriculum it is highly advocated that the social development should be part of any curriculum. Some of the psychologists such as Vygotsky have contributed much on child development. Vygotsky believed that humans

This is the power of an informed public.

Edward Snowden, letter on behalf of Amnesty International on privacy of an individual. Ending mass surveillance of private phone calls under the Patriot Act is a historic victory for the rights of every citizen. Yet while we have reformed this one program, many others remain.   This is because of you. This is the power of an informed public. Ending mass surveillance, what does it mean? - you don't care about the right to privacy because you have nothing to hide is no different than saying you don't care about free speech because you have nothing to say. We can't take the right to privacy for granted, just like we can't take the right to free speech for granted. We can't let these invasions of our rights stand. 'Never have I been so grateful to have been so wrong'. In solidarity, Edward Snowden, for Amnesty International

Birds' Moral sense

Crow in a cage:  a Crow that was being housed in a cage in the Bannerghatta shelter, used to elicit a strong response from other Crows that would rummage the garden. The crows would pick up a food from the nearby dumps, or wherever they found them, and attempt to feed the crow in the cage. They were also very hostile towards any intruder who approached the cage! (Prashanth, bngbirds msg# 8242, June 2005 )   Bushchat and the wagtail:   In the backyard of a house next to the Sarakki-Jaraganahalli kere, I’d come across a trapped Wagtail in the grillwork surrounding the house. The Wagtail in its attempt to free form this enclosed space was uttering calls that was being “attended” to by a Bushchat from the nearby hedges. The Bushchats were seen flying into every other corner the Wagtail would nudge itself into, in order to free itself from the grills ( bngbirds msg# 8242, June 2005 ). The response of smaller owls  to playback, is assumed to be suppressed when the calls of larger owls

Change whom?

Either in the world we see Mullas, sadhus restrain the worldly life and company of worldly people, to which they could benefit. Or we see people completely submerse in the world and worldly desires, detriment (harm) the people. We need competent people who could be change agents for themselves and benefit the society. Commitment to change the world is Spurious (false) and fidelity (loyalty) is self change. No man can change the world, one can change himself alone. -MAQM

Right to Indian style Toilet- RIT

I am writing this piece to gather your views and spread awareness, please write your comments. As I feel that it is something followed undemocratically, without our choice almost at every public place the sitting style toilet (famously called western toilet) is being installed. We sometimes see shoe steps of the people on toilet seats on which we sit and some times the excretory (shit) is stuck on the seat or on water spray handle. Indian style toilet vs sitting style toilet: It has been argued that squatting (Indian toilet style) is "the only natural defecation posture". 'A sitting posture may increase diverticulosis  of the colon. The magnitude of straining during defecation is at least three times greater than with the squatting posture'. Initially in many places the sitting toilets were used for patients and handicaps. In modernity 'Sitting style' toilet is perceived as elite status. I am not completely against this modern concept. If we can complete

Rules are for us:

One fine morning I skid from my bike and fell off on the road and my forehead part hit the road. To my luck I was wearing a Full cover ISI mark helmet, I got hurt only a little on my knee. When I checked my helmet there were scratches on the helmet, if I wasn't wearing a helmet these scratches would have been on my face instead of helmet. I used to think a lot about what are the rules for. And on this day of my skidding when I introspected, I realised that rules are for us. In this article we will try to understand morality in the light of this incident. We are understanding ‘moral’ in general approach where we have to be moral and ethical in order to maintain the social order  (Shaffer & Kipp , 2010) . The social order where an individual is being socially responsible and following the directions set by his family, community or state, but with rationality. Let us understand social order through an example: In many cities it is a Government order that a Motor bike rider s

Teacher Recognition in India:

The teachers are the torch bearers who pass on the knowledge, culture, traditions, language and technology to the next generation and it is a continuous cycle. The teachers have the job of dealing with the maturing children, it is the toughest job as humans are not machines. The children whose  parents are educated, mostly do get lot of supervision and support at home. In this circumstance some part of guidance comes from parents and some part does come from school. There are some children (Urban\semi urban) who attend private tuition, get home work supervision, class dairy check, on-line education support and most importantly motivation. The other set of students are 'first generation' school goers who usually do no get as much support as enjoyed by other children as they depend only on supervision and support at school. The first generation school goers are those children who are the first to get formal education among their family members. The family where none has go

Harness the power of education

The conventional wisdom holds that all education is good and the more of it one has, the better .... The truth is that without significant precautions, education can equip people merely to be more effective vandals of the earth’ Orr, D. W.
