Crow in a cage: a Crow that was being housed in a cage in the Bannerghatta shelter, used to elicit a strong response from other Crows that would rummage the garden. The crows would pick up a food from the nearby dumps, or wherever they found them, and attempt to feed the crow in the cage. They were also very hostile towards any intruder who approached the cage! Bushchat and the wagtail: In the backyard of a house next to the Sarakki-Jaraganahalli kere, I’d come across a trapped Wagtail in the grillwork surrounding the house. The Wagtail in its attempt to free form this enclosed space was uttering calls that was being “attended” to by a Bushchat from the nearby hedges. The Bushchats were seen flying into every other corner the Wagtail would nudge itself into, in order to free itself from the grills (bngbirds msg# 8242, June 2005).
The response of smaller owls to playback, is assumed to be suppressed when the calls of larger owls are played. However, this may vary with seasons. In order to compare such responses, the response of the smaller owl to conspecifics may be measured, while comparing against the larger ones. (Boal, C.W., and Bibles, B.D., 2001. Responsiveness of Elf Owls to conspecific and Great Horned Owl calls. Vol 72, No 1. Journal of Field Ornithology)
