Self-respect is an important part of our identity because it reflects how we view ourselves, which in turn impacts every area of our life, including our relationships, work, and social life. Respecting and loving ourselves is the first step toward gaining the love and respect of others.
Everyone expect that their dignity, identity and body is safe and protected from exploitation. This to make sure our self respect is protected. By unknowingly many of them get exploitated without being aware that they are exploited by a known friend, family or acquaintance (a person that you know but who is not a close friend).
Exploitation can take many forms including human trafficking, forced labour, sexual exploitation, criminal exploitation, debt bondage and domestic servitude.
Of the above types, sexual exploitation is becoming frequent among youngsters. Youngster might be considering a person as colleague or a friend, but that person might be taking advantage of that connection or power or relationship. A sexual exploitation might be verbal or physical harassment of a sexual nature. It could be a touch, vulgar talk/joke or just sitting closely with a bad intention.
The person might intentionally get inappropriately closer to another gender in bus, train, restaurant, college or also during a casual walk. You might feel that person has right to, as he is your connection, but never know of his evil intention.
There is a law to protect people from sexual harrasment, but many are not reported because of fear of further consequences or protection of self identity and self respect.
There are times a person who is exploitated is not able to distinguish whether that touch or closeness is of a friendly nature or its a planned exploitation. And also there are situations when a person is aware of being exploitated, but do not stop that person from that act because the other person is in power. And also the person who is being exploitated might be having low self esteem and unable to say 'No' or 'Stop'.
Parents and the guardians should every day spend time with the children and enquire about day to day routine and wellbeing of the children. Whether the child is in the school, college, or workplace.
We have trust in our children but we cannot trust the situation and environment which our children might face in their day to day life.
Sexual exploitation has life time impact on self esteem, behaviour, family life, professional life, and mental health.
