Character of a student in Islam

Man is superior to all the creations of Allah. A man can think, reflect, decide and act upon and execute various duties. The education makes man understand various paths in life. Allah says in Quran that he has created things in pairs- Male and female, Day and Night, and likewise Allah has created two paths for a man- one is good and other one is bad. The good way is Allah’s and the bad way is Satan’s. Thus it is our responsibility as a student to understand what is good for us and what is bad for us.
Holy Prophet has shown us path for success in every situation of life. Thus we as a student should take the responsibility of following the teachings of Holy Prophet. We as a student spend at least 30 to 40% of our life time in education institutions. And it is our responsibility to build our character as per the commandments of Allah and the teachings of Holy Prophet.
Holy Prophet has taught us the lessons for all the state of affairs. Let us see two traits of a good student- (1) Truthfulness and (2) self-reflection-

1)      Truthfulness: The great sage Mahmmad Ibn Sayyed said: When you seek God with sincerity. He comes to you as a mirror in your hand wherein you can see every wonderful thing of this world and the next world. Hazrat Ibn Abbas said: He who has got these four qualities is successful- truthfulness, shame, good conduct and gratefulness (Ghazzali, N.D).

The Holy prophet was asked about the means of getting perfection. He replied: Truthfulness in talk and action with sincerity. The man who has got these six things is called Siddiq or a great truthful man. The man who has got one or more of these things is called Sadiq or simple truthful man-
(1) Truth in talk,
(2) Truth in will and resolve,
(3) Truth in promise,
(4) Truth in fulfilling promise,
(5) Truth in action,
(6) Truth in various stages of religion. (Ghazzali, N.D)

2)      Self-Reflection: The Holy Prophet asked Gabriel about Ihsan (doing good). He said: The meaning of Ihsan is to worship God in such a way as if you are seeing Him. The prophet said: Worship Allah in such a way that you actually see Him. If you think that you are not seeing Him, then think that He is seeing you, Allah says: Allah watches you- 4 : 1. God says: Don’t you see what every man earns? He says: Does he not know that God sees- 16 : 14?  The meaning of “Allah watches over you” according to Ibnul Mobarak is- Keep the thought in mind as if you are seeing God. The great sage Abu Osman Magrebi said: The best way on which man can lead himself is taking account of himself keeping watch over himself and doing all deeds with wisdom (Ghazzali, N.D).

The knowledge cannot be gauged in terms of information gained, but through the application in practical life situations. A learned man is a great asset to the world. A doctor has to be a caring doctor, the lawyer has to be a just lawyer, police has to be a fair police, and a pilot has to be swift. As someone said, the society cannot stand by itself, the society is like a tree, and the roots sustain it. The people are the roots of the society. And the children are the people of tomorrow.

A father’s dedication and sacrifice towards children’s education:

- "I never told my children what my job was. I never wanted them to feel ashamed because of me. When my youngest daughter asked me what I did, I used to tell her hesitantly that I was a labourer. Before I went back home every day, I used to take a bath in the public toilets so they did not get any hint of the work I was doing. I wanted to send my daughters to school, to educate them. I wanted them to stand in front of people with dignity. I never wanted anyone to look down upon them like the way everyone did to me.  People always humiliated me. I invested every penny of my earnings for my daughters’ education. I never bought a new shirt, instead I used the money for buying books for them. Respect is all I wanted them to earn for me.  I was a cleaner. The day before the last date of my daughter’s college admission, I could not manage to get her admission fees. I could not work that day. I was sitting beside the rubbish, trying hard to hide my tears. All my co-workers were looki...

The invention of the school/college system:

-  Have you ever thought about why we have to send our children to school? Do we have the choice not to school our child? The school is considered so holy that there is no life without school. The school/college is more important than bread, butter, and water. Schools and colleges that we see today are the products of history. In the beginning, for hundreds of thousands of years, children educated themselves through self-directed play and exploration. There were no master plan buildings and closed cages (classrooms) as we see today or been in one of the cages ourselves. In relation to the biological history of us as humans, schools are very recent institutions or the factories of discipline (one of the synonyms of discipline is punishment). The meaning of discipline in English is ‘the practice of training people to obey rules and behave well’. The education system as we know it today is only about 200 years old. Before that, formal education was mostly reserved for the rich. B...

We should always calculate the consequences of our actions:

- *The consequences of our actions*       A young man saw his primary school teacher on a wedding. He went to greet him with all the respect and admiration. He said to him: "Do you remember me, Teacher?" The teacher said: "No, introduce yourself." The student said: "I was your student in the 3rd Grade, I am the one who stole the watch of a child in the classroom. I will remind you but I am sure you remember the story." One of the boys in my class had a beautiful watch, so I decided to steal it.                He came to you crying that someone had stolen his watch.  You asked us to stand so as to search our pockets.       I realized that my action would be exposed in front of the Students and Teachers. I will be called a thief, a liar and my character will be shattered forever. You asked us to stand and face the wall and close our eyes completely. You went searching from pocket to pocket, and when you r...

Protecting self respect and understanding sexual exploitation in day to day life:

-  Self-respect is an important part of our identity because it reflects how we view ourselves, which in turn impacts every area of our life, including our relationships, work, and social life. Respecting and loving ourselves is the first step toward gaining the love and respect of others. Everyone expect that their dignity, identity and body is safe and protected from exploitation. This to make sure our self respect is protected. It's the time for education to enhance the children's world view and understand that there is so much beyond money, fame and power.

 - Today's education makes us look at the world through a key hole and limits us to it. We make all our major life decisions based on this limited perspective. We need to widen that keyhole for us and our children by providing them with the education that made the first generation of this caring world. With such a perspective, we can see more, know more and the possibility of growth is immense.. The urge for Money, fame, power comes out of that key hole. That's why our children like the career which can give money, fame, power. Like an example, you ask any child what they would like to become, they will say, Doctor, Engineer, Lawyer, IAS, CA. And you will rarely see or do not see children mention, Artist, Nurse, Teacher, Social change Activist, climate change Activist etc. It's the time for education to enhance the children's world view and understand that there is so much beyond money, fame and power. That's true meaning of education.

When people come to the cities and settle, we see only one side of the coin:

 - Today worldwide the urban centres are becoming too large, complex and complicated. People are finding it difficult to come up with solutions with regards to city management. Currently, it was in the news that most of the free public spaces in Bangalore city will be made into paid parking spaces. These efforts are one of the measures to encourage public transport. In this proposal there is an effort to issue the parking passes, also monthly passes to the owners of the cars which they can buy and use to park cars beside designated public roads. This is just a proposal which was published in the newspaper recently. This is one example of how things are becoming complex in the cities.  In another example, before few years in Delhi, it was in the news where the 'even and odd car number' system was introduced. Even after introducing the system, it was also not as effective as expected. Delhi also considered being one of the most polluted cities in the world. New Delhi was the wor...

Jaya Bachchan gives an emotional, sensical reply, “Why is it, I want to ask, that Indian women are wearing more western clothes?”

 - Jaya Bachchan asks why Indian women are wearing more western clothes: We've accepted it gives that 'manpower' to a woman. “Why is it, I want to ask, that Indian women are wearing more western clothes?”  Shweta, the daughter of Jaya Bachchan said, “Yes with the industrial revolution and when all the men went to war and women started working in factories. So they had to wear pants because you can't be doing heavy machine work with…”. This is the technical and need based situation when women started wearing men-clothes, but why do we think wearing of men-clothes makes women look powerful. Don't you think women are more powerful in their own way? We don't want western clothes to make our women feel empowered, powerful. Women are already powerful and respected. Jaya makes an emotional, sensical reply, she says in the conversation, "I feel what has happened is very unknowingly, we've accepted that the western clothing is more… it gives that manpower to a w...
