The word 'manifesto' refers to public declaration of intentions. The manifestos has a real affect on the political discourse, but this manifesto intends to evaluate our human, cultural and social capital. This below manifesto underlines the education dreamt by our ancestors. The dream to see liberation of true human thinking, values of sacrifice and the hold 'On to Almighty we believe'. The dream to see caring hand of the father holding the little finger of a child and this child growing up to lend a resting grip on his shoulder to an old aged father.
"The mission of the Department of Primary and Secondary Education is to equip children of the State with specified knowledge, skills and values to enable them to become good human beings and productive, socially responsible citizens and to achieve excellence in whatever they do". This statement is the mission statement of one of the state education departments. The statement, 'enable to become good human beings' puts me into question, Did my schooling really helped me to achieve this? I leave to you to answer this question to your heart.
Durkheim is a famous sociologist and thinker on education, he defines moral education as part and parcel of education itself. He says, Discipline is not suppression or repression. In fact the human possibility is defined within a limited environment. If you go beyond your limit you enter a void (unproductive space). The individual must understand the limits and set realizable goals for himself. Education must help the child with setting these goals. Any disciplinary regime must evolve with the individual and with time.
Today the education has mostly become the skill producer to supply to the job market. The subjects are taught in a manner that the children are limited in thinking. R.S peters makes a statement that 'education is preparation for life'. In this sense the education should equip children to develop natural thinking, help to co-relate the individual problem in the perspective of larger society. The children should easily make out the difference between good and bad, in perspective of self as well as society.
Most of the schools teach moral education as a extra curricular subject. This leads to moral values become extra curricular in life too. The school should help me discover 'who am I?' I should know what empathy, emotions, healthy communication and interpersonal relations are. I should know what stress and anger are. I should be able to analyse my creativity, through critical thinking, problem solving and decision making. I should be an educated man, and not an educated labourer in a white shirt.
I want to know and value the richness of my culture and my language. I want to develop my moral consciousness that I respect my elders, sympathize with my youngsters, value my scholars. I should protect my nature, the water, the air, the soil, the river, the oceans, the mountains and all the beings of the earth. I cannot blame anyone on the earth, as we ourselves live on the entire territory of the earth.
Now we need a positive rupture. The rupture starts with self. My education should help me to inculcate this in me, make me a good citizen of the world, help me to bring peace and happiness in me.
We have many writers and orators, we need the practical transformers. We have to be the change we wish to see in the world. Think moral.
